Midtown West's new restaurants this year haven't spread out along Tenth Avenue one storefront at a time. They've arrived in clusters. One chef has put two restaurants and a planned cocktail bar inside a single residential building on West 38th Street. A Brookfield food hall coming to Tenth Avenue will hold 12 counters, a full-service restaurant and two bars under one roof. If you live in Hell's Kitchen or near Hudson Yards, the useful question for a weeknight dinner west of Tenth is increasingly which building to go to, more than which block.

The rest of this post looks at how that pattern played out in 2026, building by building, and what it means for getting there on foot this fall.

One Address on West 38th Street, Three Rooms

Henry Hall is a luxury residential building on West 38th Street near Tenth Avenue. In 2026 it also became the base for chef Sujan Sarkar, a James Beard Awards finalist best known for his Indian restaurants in Chicago.

First came Indienne, the New York expansion of his Michelin-starred Chicago tasting-menu restaurant. It opened May 28 at 515 West 38th Street. Indienne is a small room on the second floor that serves tasting menus. The star belongs to the Chicago restaurant. The New York room is still too new to have its own record.

Elder opened on the ground floor next door on August 6, at 517 West 38th Street. Sarkar calls it "a British steakhouse with Indian influences," drawing on his years as head chef at Automat in London. He first planned the concept for a hotel, then chose to put it in the same building as Indienne.

Elder is where the cluster becomes useful to neighbors, not just to people booking a special occasion. It is a 3,300-square-foot room with 100 seats and a horseshoe bar, open Tuesday through Saturday from 5 to 11 p.m. Reservations go through Resy and SevenRooms, but the restaurant keeps room for walk-ins. Menu prices at opening covered a wide range, so the same room works for very different evenings:

  • Chicken liver choux buns with spiced cherry chutney, $8
  • Masala fries, $9
  • Beet Wellington with goat cheese cream, $34
  • Berkshire pork rib chop with vindaloo masala, $42
  • Filet with Tellicherry peppercorns, $64
  • Dover sole with curry-beurre blanc, $120

So a bar seat with a samosa-style starter and a Negroni costs a fraction of a tasting menu upstairs, all in the same building. The bar list leans London with South Asian touches. The Spice Exchange is a $21 Negroni made with toasted fenugreek, coriander and cumin.

The third room is still on the way. Apas, Sarkar's South Asian cocktail bar, will go upstairs with Indienne. In August, Eater reported it was expected by the end of 2026. No opening date has been announced since then.

Four Blocks South, a Restaurant That Opened Twice

Saverne, Gabriel Kreuther's wood-fired Alsatian restaurant at 531 West 34th Street, first opened on March 2. Eight days later, a smoke detector went off during dinner service. FDNY responded to what was later described as a mechanical issue hidden in the floors above the ceiling. The restaurant then stayed closed for four months. It reopened on July 27.

For anyone on these blocks, the reopening means Saverne's first real season is happening now, in fall, and not last spring as planned. The chef's counter faces the open hearth. Edible Manhattan's writer, back for the soft opening, said you could smell the wood fire from a block away. Kreuther says open-fire cooking goes back to the farm in Alsace where he grew up.

Saverne is a single restaurant. It still fits the West 30s pattern of large, chef-led rooms that pull a neighborhood dinner toward one address. A dinner at Elder and a dinner at Saverne are about a ten-minute walk apart.

Market Hall Takes the Same Idea Further

The building-as-destination idea gets its biggest version at Manhattan West. Brookfield Properties is preparing The Market Hall at 398 Tenth Avenue, just west of Penn Station. It will be a 34,000-square-foot, two-story space with 12 casual food concepts, an independent full-service restaurant, an indoor bar, a rooftop terrace bar, and retail and service tenants.

As of late September, the official Market Hall page still read "Opening soon" and listed these tenants, with "more to come":

  • Shifka, the all-day pita shop from the team behind Sami & Susu in NoHo, opening its second location
  • BKLYN Larder, the Boerum Hill specialty shop, in its first Manhattan outpost
  • Springbone, with bone broths and grain bowls
  • Alfalfa, the California import serving salads, wraps, smoothies and coffee
  • Matter, a NoHo concept that calls itself a precision nutrition restaurant
  • Super Burrito, serving Mission-style burritos and running the hall's bar program
  • Sushi Counter, with Australian-style hand rolls
  • Matchaful

The full-service restaurant and both bars haven't been named yet. Brookfield has given only "fall 2026" as the opening window and says the debut will include tastings and grand opening events. The company's stated model is Hudson Eats at Brookfield Place, which Time Out calls one of Lower Manhattan's busiest food halls since it opened in 2014.

Time Out pitched the hall to commuters coming through Moynihan Train Hall. For neighbors, the rooftop bar and the full-service restaurant are the parts that could make it an evening stop rather than just a lunch stop. They are also the parts nobody has named yet.

The 2026 Calendar for These Blocks

Put the dates side by side and the timing shows up clearly. Nearly every opening landed between spring and late summer, and the rest are set for the months ahead.

Place Address 2026 status
Saverne 531 W. 34th St. Opened March 2; reopened July 27
Queens Tavern 20 Hudson Yards Opened May 7
Indienne 515 W. 38th St. Opened May 28
Eleanor's Jour Et Nuit 398 Ninth Ave., at W. 33rd St. Opened June 9
Elder 517 W. 38th St. Opened August 6
The Market Hall 398 Tenth Ave. Listed as opening fall 2026
Apas 515 W. 38th St. Expected by end of 2026

Two entries sit at the edges of the West 30s. Queens Tavern, from Evolv Collection, is at 20 Hudson Yards on the 31st Street side. Eleanor's Jour Et Nuit is at the corner of Ninth Avenue and West 33rd Street, an address Eater files under Chelsea. Eleanor's comes from Avra, the Greek hospitality group, and is a sibling of the piano bar Le Bar Penelope. It runs as a café during the day and switches to cocktails, dinner and DJs at night. That two-shift setup is the same idea as Henry Hall and Market Hall, fitted into one room. One address covers more than one kind of outing.

Getting There This Fall Takes a Little Planning

The busiest of these addresses sit right next to the next phase of the Port Authority Bus Terminal replacement. A temporary routing change will send NJ Transit buses along West 40th and West 39th Streets to a new entrance near 39th Street and Tenth Avenue. NJ.com reported on September 30 that the change was set to begin within weeks and last until early 2027.

Port Authority officials told drivers to allow extra time around Ninth Avenue between West 39th and West 42nd Streets during the afternoon rush. Traffic agents will be posted at 40th and Tenth, 40th and Dyer, and 40th and Ninth. If you're coming from the 40s or 50s for a 6 p.m. table at Elder, the usual route down Ninth or Tenth runs right through that zone. Approaching from 37th or 38th Street, or leaving a little early, is the simpler choice until the reroute ends.

On Fridays, there's an easy pairing a few blocks south. Backyard at Hudson Yards runs free movies on a 30-foot screen through October: Hairspray on October 9, Wicked on October 16, Back to the Future on October 23 and Beetlejuice on October 30. Runners can join the Rhone Extra Mile Run Club, which starts October 7 and meets Wednesdays through the month, with post-run drink specials at Bronx Brewery.

If you live near these blocks and want to know how ground-floor tenants like Elder or a project like Market Hall factor into a building's long-term story, The Shapot Team is happy to walk through it with you, building by building. Request a Market Consultation whenever the question comes up.
